Yvonne Rainer is a New York City–based choreographer who was a leading member of Judson Dance Theater, the 1960s avant-garde dance collective that rejected modern dance. In 1965 Rainer wrote her famous “No Manifesto,” a public dismissal of the qualities that exemplified then-current concert dance styles: spectacle, glamour, virtuosity.

Trio A, a solo dance by Rainer, was initially performed in 1966 as a trio by Rainer and fellow New York choreographer-dancers David Gordon and Steve Paxton under the title The Mind is a Muscle, Part 1. Despite unimpressive reviews, Trio A has undergone numerous re-performances and transformations since its conceptual birth in 1965, but its importance as a piece of Yvonne Rainer’s has only solidified since. It has been performed in both traditional dance spaces and traditional art spaces, like museums. Yvonne Rainer: Trio A A look at the avant-garde dancer's iconic piece Created in 1966 and performed for the camera in 1978, Trio A (The mind is a muscle, part I) is one of Yvonne Rainer's most iconic dance pieces. Without music, props or a mise-en-scène, the piece placed Rainer as a leader in postmodern and contemporary dance. On October 4, 1999, Trio A was performed at Judson Church by Pat Catterson, Y.R., Douglas Dunn, Steve Paxton, and Colin Beatty as Trio A Pressured. “Trio A,” originally “The Mind Is a Muscle, Part 1,” was first danced by Ms. Rainer, Steve Paxton and David Gordon at Judson Memorial Church: the same choreography done concurrently by three Yvonne Rainer (born November 24, 1934) is an American dancer, choreographer, and filmmaker, whose work in these disciplines is regarded as challenging and experimental.

Early life. Yvonne Rainer was born on November 24, 1934, in San Francisco, California. Rainer's parents, Joseph and Jeanette, considered themselves radicals. Her mother, a stenographer, was born in Brooklyn to Jewish immigrants from Warsaw, and her father, a stonemason and house painter, was born in Vallanzengo, northern Italy, whence he emigrated at the age of 21.

Since its first presentation in 1966 as part of the larger performance The Mind is a Muscle, Part 1 at Judson Memorial Church in New York, it has been performed repeatedly in various forms and contexts by dancers and nondancers alike.
